Creative photos and essays from the San Juan Islands

There’s a Pelican Way housing development in Friday Harbor and while passing it in the Village van, I commented to my passengers that there are no pelicans in the San Juans, at least not that I’ve seen.

So here I’m proven wrong! This open sail boat is a plywood pram class called, uh huh, Pelican. They’re a salty little boat with a bowsprit, a centerboard for sailing against the wind, and some (called the Great Pelican) sport a cozy cuddy cabin.

Like many pretty boats, there are not many of them around, but maybe that makes the ones that do show up more special. I’d feel the same way should a real pelican arrive, the feathered variety.
