Sticking out like a sore thumb

Sticking out like a sore thumb

Mt. Baker dominates our skyline, and we’re oh so grateful. In the Northwest we sometimes take mountains for granted. No these aren’t the Rockies, or the Alps, but they are more rugged than anything available on the East coast. I’m always thrilled to glimpse Mt. Baker during my day. Like today, I was with a walking friend and as we came around a corner, there was the mountain, “pop!”, saying “Here I am, always here, just hiding behind a tree or building sometimes, maybe even an island. After all, I’m over 50 miles away and only 10,781 feet high. That’s just four times the height of Mt. Constitution on Orcas Island.”SAM_0943

Factoid: If the earth were the size of an apple, the crust floating on the mantle would be about as thick, and smooth, as the peel on the apple. Our mountains are nothing compared to the scale of the entire planet.
